Why are there so many different kinds of church?
Christianity is a worldwide faith comprising communities of believers in virtually every land and culture. It is founded on a God who, in Jesus, engaged with the world around Him. It is, by definition, a faith that connects with the culture around it, so it is no surprise that there are very different kinds of Christian expression and worship throughout the world. One of the strengths of Christianity is that it can also relate to different levels of our humanity. Some of us are deep thinkers, seeking a faith that engages us with deep and philosophical questions; others may be less concerned with the intellectual aspects of faith, but look for rich and moving experiences of worship which touch our emotions and spirit. Equally there are those who find great meaning in traditional words which have been used over centuries, while others prefer something more spontaneous and free.

Over the years, different streams of Christianity have emerged which place greater and less emphasis on these and other elements. We would have to admit that at times, these denominations have been founded in a context of dispute and dis-unity, but today all the mainstream denominations in the UK have a close and committed working relationship; many local churches are affiliated to more than one. We maintain our different traditions because we recognise and celebrate the diversity it offers, but this exists within a context of co-operation and respect.

The diversity of Christian tradition creates an opportunity for you to explore the Christian faith in a context that you feel most comfortable with. If you find one particular local church is not easy for you to relate to, then try another. The mainstream denominations are not the sources of division within the church, they are what holds it together - after all, imagine how boring and limited your local High Street would be if every shop was exactly the same.
