Where do Christians get their beliefs from?
Everyone believes something about God, the supernatural and the hereafter - so how do we know that what Christians believe is not just another set of theories and speculation? Many people argue that we should be free to choose what to believe, and so long as it works for us, not be too concerned about what others think - particularly organised religions. There are certainly plenty of ideas and philosophies to choose from, and there are no doubt grains of truth in many of them.

But if we are seeking to understand and believe in God,the key question is not so much what we think about God, but what God teaches us about Himself? Christians believe that this is to be found in the writings of the Bible - the oldest and most widely believed Scriptures in the world.

There are many ideas about Christianity, and many groups claiming to be Christian who have no real connection with recognised Churches and denominations. This does not mean that they are necessarily wrong, or their claims invalid. However anyone, if challenged, should be able to demonstrate that their interpretation of the Christian faith is rooted in a realistic and reasonable application of the teaching of the Bible.

Some aspects of Christian belief do not therefore always attract great popularity in today's world. This is not because Christians are deliberately seeking to be awkward, are set in their ways, or like to be critical or judgemental - we are simply seeking to be true to our traditions and to place the teaching of Scripture above everything else.

The Bible is a book which is intended to challenge and shape us, and at times can leave the most established Christian believer feeling uncomfortable - but it is also a book filled with a message of life, hope and new beginnings - that's why we believe it to be God's Word.
